Communication Nation: VizThink 08 sketch notes

Dave Gray uses flickr to capture and communicate his notes. It's very clever, because flickr just starts a slideshow, and before you know it, you're merrily on the way. It is lots easier to capture a picture on paper than in powerpoint, so this about how much easier it is to communicate visually this way. And, it shows how even a very quick, very rough sketch has tremendous value, and is even more memorable than something that is finely polished. 25 Ways to Simplify Your Life with Kids | Zen Habits

Zenhabits has a great post on 25 ways to simplify your life with kids. One example:

Regular cleanups. If you're like me, you don't like a huge mess. Teach your kids to clean up after themselves -- let them make a mess, but every now and then, tell them it's time to clean up. Be sure to tell them to clean up before moving on to something else, such as lunchtime or bedtime. It's good to have regular times during the day when they do cleanups, such as before bed or before they leave for school, so that the house is always clean at night and during the day.
Others items include: toys bins, bedtime routines, don't schedule too much, focus on doing not spending.

Visual Thinking Videos

At the VizThink blog, there is a tremendously useful post about Dan Roam's new book, The Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures. What makes it so useful are the three free videos that cover much of the book's content. What better way to learn visual thinking than with video?

Internet Power

Via Lee Lefever's blog comes this link to Internet Power, a 1995 video about the Internet. This video is so funny and bad it makes me cringe and laugh at the same time. And gosh, 1995 seems like *recent* history to me, compared to say, oh 300 baud modems and DDial back in 1985.

Writing a Book is Different Than Writing a Blog Post

I've been writing a book. It's very different from posting blog entries. When you write something for your blog, you get immediate gratification and feedback: by the morning after you've got comments and hits, and you know if your post has struck a chord somewhere. Writing a book has been very different: I keep writing and writing. And when I wake up in the morning, I look for the reaction. But there is none, because nothing has been shared. It's still all in the book. It's very strange, after a year of active blogging (mostly on other blogs) to then switch gears and do so much book writing with so little feedback and interaction.
